Mental Health Support

Mental illness manifests differently in everyone. Symptoms will often vary from person to person, ranging in levels of severity. At Deception Bay Doctors, we offer mental health services for patients in and around the Moreton Bay region, as well as Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. We assess and treat patients experiencing a wide range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression and substance abuse disorders.

We recommend booking an appointment with your general practitioner at the first signs of decline in your mental health. It is essential to address these issues as early as possible so that we can help support and guide you towards a healthier state of mind.

Effecting One in Five Australians

Mental illness isn’t anything to be ashamed of. One in five Australians aged 16 to 85 will experience a mental health condition in any given year. Approximately 50 percent of us will experience a mental health condition at some point throughout our lives. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health and should be treated with the same urgency.

Our doctors are highly-trained and qualified to assist patients with various mental health conditions. We understand that you may be feeling anxious or nervous to speak with a doctor about how you are feeling. Having a mental health condition does not make you ‘weak’ or a bad person in any way. Informing your doctor that you are feeling nervous can help them take extra measures to ensure your comfort and will also provide a deeper insight into how your mental health affects you.

Mental Health Care Plan

During your appointment, our doctors may find that you’re eligible for a mental health care plan. A mental health care plan outlines our professional recommendations for steps you can take towards treatment. This may include a referral to an allied health professional, such as a psychologist, social worker or occupational therapist.

Accessing allied health services becomes more affordable with a mental health care plan. If eligible, you will be entitled to a Medicare rebate on up to 20 individual sessions or group appointments with a psychologist, social worker or occupational therapist in a calendar year.

How to Seek Help

If you have been experiencing increased feelings of sadness, anger, anxiety or depression for two weeks or longer, we recommend getting in touch with a professional. These emotions can quickly and easily impact your ability to participate in regular day-to-day activities, such as work, school or interacting with your family, friends and peers.

If you would like to talk to someone about your feelings, and don’t feel comfortable speaking with family or friends, many support services are available. Alternatively, we recommend writing down your feelings and anything you would like to discuss with your doctor so that you feel prepared for your appointment.
